Grading
Grading refers to the shaping and levelling the ground or “grade” around your home, so water naturally drains away from the foundation. Proper grading helps prevent water from pooling near your house and reduces the risk of water intrusion and flooding.
In many Alberta municipalities the ground should slope away from the foundation at a minimum of 5%. This means the soil should drop approximately 6 inches over the first 10 feet away from the house.
The type of soil used in grading is important. Good quality fill such as clay can help achieve the desired slope. That clay is then covered with topsoil and grass is planted to help prevent erosion.
In some situations, grading alone may not be enough to manage water around the home. Additional drainage solutions, such as downspout extensions or swales may be needed to direct water safely away from the foundation.
Proper grading is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help keep your basement dry and protect your home long-term.

Correcting the grading around a house is essential for proper drainage and to prevent water from pooling near the foundation. Here are the best steps to achieve effective grading:
Assess the current grading:
Walk around your property to identify low spots where water collects. Use a level or a long board with a level to check slopes.
Determine the ideal slope:
Aim for a slope of about 5% (a drop of 6 inches over the first 10 feet) away from the foundation.
Add soil as needed:
If you have low spots, you may need to add soil to create a slope. Use a good quality clay, and ensure it is left high to allow for settlement.
Create a slope:
Use a rake or shovel to create a gentle slope away from your home. Ensure the soil is evenly spread and compacted.
Install drainage solutions (if necessary):
Consider adding swales if grading alone does not solve the water issue. Ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
Plant grass or ground cover:
After grading, plant grass or ground cover to help prevent erosion.
Regular maintenance:
Periodically check the grading, especially after heavy rains, and make adjustments as needed. By following these steps, you can effectively correct the grading around your house and help protect your foundation from water intrusion. Learn more about Grading & Parging)
