Maintaining Your Window Wells
Window wells help keep soil and water away from basement windows. Proper maintenance is important to prevent water from collecting around the foundation.
Here are a few simple steps to maintain them:
Regular Cleaning: Remove any leaves, dirt, and debris from the window well to ensure proper drainage and prevent any water from pooling.
Check for Damage: Inspect around the window for cracks or signs of deterioration. This may include damaged or deteriorated parging and cracks in the foundation. Also check the window well itself for any damage that may suggest getting it replaced.
Ensure Proper Drainage: Check that the vertical drain is functioning properly. Water should not collect in the bottom of the window well. Also ensure that the clay around the window well slopes away from the foundation to prevent water from pooling.
Consider Installing Window Well Covers: Window well covers help keep debris out and reduce maintenance. Covers also help prevent large amounts of water from accumulating during heavy rains.
Check Window Seals: Inspect the seals around the windows for leaks or gaps.
Seasonal Maintenance: It’s a good idea to inspect and clean window wells in the spring and again in the fall as a part of regular seasonal maintenance.
